Partnering with Leesa Sleep
Based in Virginia Beach, VA, Leesa is a direct-to-consumer online luxury mattress company that offers 100 percent American-made mattresses delivered directly to consumers' doors. From its start, Leesa has measured its own success not just by the bottom line, but by the company's overall social impact.
Leesa donates one mattress for every ten the company sells. The Bowery Mission was one of the first recipients of a major donation, and in 2015, Leesa committed to replacing every single mattress across our various sites.
Q&A with Leesa Sleep
How did your organization learn about The Bowery Mission?
Leesa was introduced to The Bowery Mission through a mutual connection in 2015. We knew that if we were going to focus on donating our product — which we do, one for every ten sold — we would need to find exceptional giving partners to work with. The Bowery Mission was our first partner outside of Virginia and we have been working with you closely ever since.
Why is our mission (breaking the cycle of poverty, homelessness and addiction) important to your organization?
Since day one, Leesa set out to be a different kind of company. We measure our success as much by our financial success as our impact on our community. Being in the business of sleep, Leesa has made it its mission to help provide a safe place of comfort and refuge to those experiencing homelessness, domestic risk and human trafficking.
Why does your organization partner with The Bowery Mission?
We love The Bowery Mission. As our first giving partner outside of Virginia, you really have been with us since the beginning. The Bowery Mission provides such thoughtful, individualized care for each of its residents. We want to work with non-profits that go beyond just providing basic needs, to really get to the root of what caused that person to become homeless in the first place. You have become a gold standard for what we seek in giving partners.
What value has our partnership brought to your organization?
Your work inspires and motivates us every day. We not only sell mattresses and help people sleep better, but through our sales, we're able to help organizations like yours. We make it a priority to build strong relationships with our giving partners and we are always excited to share The Bowery Mission's work with our customers and like-minded, purpose-driven retail partners, like West Elm.
What is a favorite moment in volunteering/partnering with The Bowery Mission?
The staff at The Bowery Mission make moments special. We love any time we get to see James Macklin (The Bowery Mission's Director of Outreach and previous client). He is the embodiment of strength and inspiration and we could talk to him for hours. He has dedicated his life to helping the New York City community and his life story is a role-model for so many.
What do you envision for our partnership in the future?
Beyond product donations, we would love to see our partnership serve as an example for the impact a company can have on its community when they work with a dedicated organization like The Bowery Mission. We will continue to join forces to bring awareness about homelessness, breaking down the stigma around it.
What do you want others to know about The Bowery Mission?
The Bowery Mission is the real deal — lives change within your walls every single day and by partnering, giving and volunteering, we are all able to be a part of what you're doing. It's powerful.

"As The Bowery Mission has expanded our ability to offer shelter every single night of the year, Leesa has walked with us every step of the way — first with donated mattresses and now with financial support to run the program," says David P. Jones, President & CEO of The Bowery Mission.
