Learn how the Career Center and vocational services provide a lasting gift for people in need.
One of the most practical and life-changing programs available at The Bowery Mission is our Career Center. Thanks to the generosity of friends like you, guests gain marketable job skills and access resources on their way to meaningful employment.
These tools are especially helpful during the holidays as retailers are actively hiring part-time and seasonal employees. What a gift to see men and women put in the effort of learning new skills and get rewarded through a job!
The support of generous donors and partners provides training in every facet of employment, from resume-building workshops to mock interviews to interpersonal skill development.
Clients can benefit from The Bowery Mission’s various vocational services:
Vocational Workshop
This flexible workshop covers topics like setting goals, reaching goals, time management and more.
Computer Literacy Classes
These courses introduce clients to fundamental computer skills. Courses are offered at two skills levels — basic and advanced — and covers topics ranging from Microsoft Office suite to email to search engines.
ESL Classes
Through our partnership with the Department of Education’s Office of Adult and Continuing Education, we provide onsite ESL classes for clients who speak limited to no English. Training is designed to help non-native speakers improve listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Corporate Partner Workshops & Seminars
Workshops and seminars are led by corporate volunteer groups on topics like resume writing, mock interviews, financial literacy and networking. Our team collaborates with each corporate partner to identify appropriate workshop topics, taking into account what topics are most helpful for clients and each corporate partner’s strengths and specialties.
GED Tutoring
All clients working toward their GED are supported by highly qualified volunteer tutors who help build skills in areas of needed improvement, including reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. This program is designed to accelerate the time it takes for a client to obtain his/her GED.
Johnnie was a client who received the gift of learning through GED tutoring. He grew up in a loving home, surrounded by supportive teachers, neighbors and friends. But during high school, he faced difficulties with learning. Instead of putting more effort into school, Johnnie found fulfillment through working. “I could see the immediate results,” he shares.
While Johnnie never graduated, he knew earning a high school diploma was an important personal step. And thanks to the generosity of friends like you, The Bowery Mission’s Career Center gave him the tools he needed to reach his goals.
“I have accomplished methods of learning with my tutors that I never thought possible. I’ve learned to slow down, breathe, and stay encouraged when a problem arises.”
Earning his high school diploma has renewed Johnnie’s confidence in moving up the employment ladder. He’s learned how to be self-disciplined and structured when pursuing any goal and is grateful to pass on his example to his children. “I want to be the best role model for them,” Johnnie shares. “The Mission has helped immensely.
Many Career Center guests also receive instruction in food preparation, giving them a unique skill set that makes them qualified candidates for a wide range of positions in New York City’s renowned restaurant industry.
Perhaps most important of all, the training men and women receive through the Career Center builds their confidence! We are grateful for all The Bowery Mission’s supporters and partners who make it possible for neighbors in need to receive practical care towards true life transformation.
