The Bowery Mission continues to stand with New York’s most vulnerable neighbors.
I recently had a special opportunity to chat with Jeannie Gaffigan, who is a writer, producer and New York Times bestselling author. Jeannie and her family are volunteers and supporters of The Bowery Mission. Thank you to all who joined us for the Facebook Premiere and live Q&A on April 30, 2020 to learn about the challenges the homeless community is facing — especially amidst the COVID-19 crisis. In case you missed it, you can watch both the conversation and Q&A (beginning at 10:30) below.
This work is only possible thanks to you and friends like Jeannie, who stand with The Bowery Mission.

“What we’re not hearing about is the people who are affected by homelessness who can’t follow the ‘stay at home’ order because they don’t have a home.”
Questions that were discussed include:
- What is an example of how The Bowery Mission has modified its programs during this crisis?
- How are The Bowery Mission’s residential programs operating during this time of quarantine?
- If I see someone on the street who needs help, how can I direct them to The Bowery Mission’s services?
- I’ve seen in the news that hotels are opening their doors to provide shelter for the homeless. Is The Bowery Mission seeing a lot of people in the homeless community moving into hotels?
- Does The Bowery Mission have enough resources from donors to deal with this crisis?
- Are there any long term changes The Bowery Mission foresees it will have to make to the programs offered as a result of this crisis?
- Jeannie talks about how those who surrounded her during her recovery were so helpful. How can we “surround” The Bowery Mission and our neighbors experiencing homelessness during this time?
- Cuomo announced today that they would close subways every night for 4 hours to sanitize trains. Does The Bowery Mission anticipate that leading to an increased demand for emergency shelter?
- Jeannie, how has your involvement impacted you personally?
